While the Sikkim Government has granted ‘go-live’ licenses for operating gaming websites in the state of Sikkim, the Special Investigation Team set-up by the Supreme Court of India submitted its third interim report citing cricket betting as a key source of black money in India. The gaming community has continued to keep a close tab on the arguments in the Mahalakshmi Case, which would go a long way in determining the legality of playing online Rummy for stakes. Further, a public interest litigation was also filed before the High Court of Bombay seeking a directive to the State Government of Maharashtra to enforce the Maharashtra Casinos (Control and Tax) Act, 1976, a legislation passed by the State Legislative Assembly in 1976, that seeks to license and regulate casinos in the state.
